Frequently Asked Questions

  • Seeking therapy can be daunting and a little overwhelming at first. It’s not easy meeting a stranger for the very first time to share intimate details about yourself. Just know how brave you are for taking this step to better your mental health and improve your life. You might feel a sense of uncertainty and confusion about what to expect in your first therapy session and you’re certainly not alone.

I encourage my clients to feel empowered and in control of the process of therapy. You are an active participant not a passive recipient of therapy and as such I am guided by you throughout our time together. I truly believe that you are the expert on you. But don’t worry, I will be guiding and facilitating the process so that you feel supported throughout our time together.

It’s so important to me that everyone I work with feels comfortable and so I have ensured that my therapy room exudes a sense of calm and safety. When you arrive to your first session, I will introduce myself and give you information about our confidentiality policy and help you make an informed decision about engaging in therapy.

The focus of the first few sessions is to better understand you and your needs. I will ask you questions about what has brought you to therapy including things such as your current symptoms, challenges you might be experiencing in your day to day functioning, your future goals and dreams and what you hope to gain from working together. I will also ask you a little bit about your past such as your upbringing, family history, schooling, past relationships and so on. Although your past does not define you, it does play a role in shaping some of your coping strategies and belief systems. Together, we then create a treatment plan that best suits your needs.

I really encourage you to spend a little bit of time prior to your first session and in between your therapy sessions in general to journal or write down quick notes on your mobile phone to help prompt what you want to discuss in session so that you get the most out of your session time.
